Announcing: Clear Mat Standard

Clear Mat Standard

Clarity. Accountability. Community.

Clear Mat Standard is an initiative developed in partnership with My Bruises Are From to help strengthen Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu communities through clear expectations, responsible leadership, and shared accountability.

This work exists to support the long-term health of the community. It is not a reaction to controversy and it is not built to take advantage of moments of outrage.

Why We’re Creating This

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is built on trust.

Trust between training partners.
Trust between students and instructors.
Trust in leadership and culture.

When that trust breaks, people get hurt. Often quietly. Often without clarity about what to do next or where to turn.

Clear Mat Standard exists to help communities move forward with intention instead of assumption, and with structure instead of silence.

No system can guarantee safety. But thoughtful systems can reduce risk, clarify expectations, and support better outcomes for everyone involved.

What Makes This Different

Clear Mat Standard is not a label or a certification meant to signal perfection.

It is a community-informed model built around a few simple ideas:
Clear expectations are better than vague promises.
Accountability is healthier than denial or delay.
Culture lasts longer when people help shape it.

This initiative is designed to support leaders, empower practitioners, and keep people at the center of decision-making, especially those most vulnerable to harm.

A Community-Driven Approach

Clear Mat Standard is being built with a clear understanding that culture does not come from policy alone.

It comes from people. From everyday decisions. From what is tolerated, what is addressed, and what is modeled over time.

That is why this work emphasizes shared ownership, transparency, and participation. Not top-down control.

The goal is not to elevate single voices or isolated moments, but to pay attention to patterns, consistency, and long-term impact.

What We Are Working Toward

Clear Mat Standard is approaching launch and will provide the community with practical tools that support ethical leadership and healthier training environments.

These resources are being designed to help people understand expectations, navigate difficult situations with care, and reduce uncertainty when concerns arise.

We will share more detail at launch. Right now, the priority is building this carefully and responsibly.

Built to Serve, Not to Perform

Clear Mat Standard is not an enforcement body.
It is not an investigative organization.
It is not a marketing campaign or a pay-to-play program.

It exists to support clarity, encourage responsible leadership, and help communities respond with care instead of confusion when challenges arise.

Founding Committee

We are forming a Clear Mat Standard Founding Committee to help guide this work as it moves toward launch and beyond.

Participation will be limited to 20 contributors to ensure trust, depth, and meaningful collaboration.

Committee members will help shape priorities, identify risks, and strengthen the integrity of the work before it is released more broadly.

Who This Is For

This work is for academy owners who want to lead responsibly but have not always had clear guidance.

It is for practitioners who care about culture and understand that healthy training environments do not happen by accident.

It is for survivors and advocates who know what is at stake when power and silence intersect.

And it is for community members willing to engage thoughtfully and help build something sustainable.
